Tell us about yourself and what brought you to the North Shore.

I am passionate about yoga, food, travel and cycling; especially when all are combined!  Like most people these days I have had several "careers" and am fortunate enough to have loved them all.  Most recently I've been teaching yoga full time since 2005.

Since my youth I loved visiting the North Shore from Concord because of its beautiful beaches. After college, it was work that brought me to the North Shore. I earned a degree in Environmental Science with a minor in Geology working first as a chemist and then as an Aquatic Biologist for many years. After that I was a fitness coach at a local private gym, studied nutrition at IIN in New York City,  coached clients in healthy lifestyle choices and eventually worked loading trucks at UPS.  Then yoga happened to me.......

What/who brought you to yoga?

I have always led an active lifestyle and enjoyed being outdoors. I still seek new options to stay healthy and fit. I started yoga in 2001 out of curiosity and the desire to bring more balance into my life.

I didn't realize it then, but the timing was perfect.

Why did you want to become a yoga teacher?

This is a tough question because honestly I never wanted to become a teacher. I was way too introverted and self-conscious. I found my "niche" in assisting classes. It felt very safe for me since I was a certified strength and conditioning coach and had a working knowledge of human anatomy.  As an assistant, not have a "speaking" part in the class was another plus.

Why do you teach now?

Eventually as I gained confidence and lost income (due to career changes) it was clearly time to step out of my comfort zone and teach the practice that I love.  Now I teach because it brings me joy, satiates my desire to help others and allows me to be part of an inspiring, supportive community of fellow students and teachers of yoga.

What are some things you grateful for?

(little things/big thing....anything)

I am forever grateful for my Baptiste Power Yoga community. The Baptiste Power Yoga Institute is where I received the bulk of my training, certifications, coaching, apprenticing and support.

I am appreciative of many things. Not the least of which include a home with a roof that doesn't leak and floors not made of dirt, clean water, abundant healthy food and the best companion anyone could hope for.  I am well aware of and thankful for the privileges provided to me by the circumstances of my life.

I am most grateful for my good health and that of my loved ones.

What brings you joy? What brings you peace?

So many things bring me joy and peace now. I am more grateful than ever because of the lessons and self realization of my yoga practice. Yoga, biking, travel, the warmth of the sun, the ocean, the mountains all bring me tremendous joy and peace.

I love to learn new things. Currently I am excited to learn more about Katonah Style Yoga from my teachers in New York. I'm also taking an on-line Experiential Anatomy course with Judith Lasater and  seeking certification to teach Yin Yoga thru Josh Summers.

Fun Facts about you

I used to be an avid rock climber but that was before yoga, when I was always scared. I think I would be much better at it now. Despite the fear I have climbed in many places including The Dolomites, Yosemite, Devil's Tower, The Needles, Joshua Tree, Red Rock Canyon in Nevada and El Dorado Canyon in Colorado.  Closer to home I've climbed at Cathedral and White Horse Ledges in NH and the Shawangunks in NY.  I've hiked up most of the 4000 footers in the White Mountains in summer as well as winter. I have also summited Mount Rainer in Washington and Mt Sneffels in Colorado, both 14,000 foot mountains. I rode my bike up Mt. Washington twice for fun. I played trumpet in my high school's marching band.   I love cookies and Ice Cream.

What /Who inspires you??

My Dad inspires me in that he has always been a quiet, kind and gentle man. He is a quiet un-assuming leader by nature; a man who lives his life as an example of kindness and generosity.

I find inspiration daily in others; from the strength and grace of people who are suffering as well as from those who are unabashadly joyful.

Tell us about yourself and what brought you to the North Shore ?

I grew up in Marblehead and went to college in Maine. I have always loved the change of seasons in New England and am so grateful to call the North Shore my home. After 10 years commuting into Boston and working as a Corporate Wellness Specialist, I gave up the city job and began the best career I could ever imagine - being a mom. Three kids and two dogs later, being a mom is still my greatest accomplishment.

What brought you to yoga ?

I had studied and worked in the fitness and wellness industry for many years, and I have always been fascinated by the mind-body connection. Yoga enriched my understanding of the power of being present and the role mindfulness plays in our daily lives. Yoga helped me stay fit and find “bliss,” and my yoga mat became my sanctuary. For 90 minutes each day, I knew that no matter how crazy life was, I could find balance. Eventually my practice expanded into a lifestyle, a mindful and balanced way of living, one breath at a time.

Why did you want to become a yoga teacher ?

My passion for yoga became my calling, my dharma: “ that thing that you do, after your day job, in your free time, too early in the morning, too late at night. That thing you read about, write about, think about all the time. That thing you do when you’re all alone and there’s no one to impress, nothing to prove, no money to be made, simply a passion to pursue. That’s it! That’s your thing. That’s your heart, your guide. That’s the thing you must, must do .” ~ upliftedvibrations.com.

Yoga is my “thing,” and I want nothing more than to pass that passion on to the community at Solstice/Empower and beyond. I hope to teach skills on the mat that make a measurable difference off the mat. I believe we are all sharing in this life together, and the tradition of yoga offers us tools to stress less, smile more, untangle physical and emotional knots, and witness ourselves and each other without judgment.

What are some things/people ... for which you are grateful?

I am incredibly grateful for family. Family and yoga have always felt very connected to me. A supportive husband and vibrant, inspiring children bring out the best in me. I am infinitely grateful as well for my “yoga” family - both teachers and students alike. The communities at Solstice and Empower inspire me daily. I am also grateful to be of service and give back. And finally, I am grateful for long walks with my dog, sunny days at the beach, fall foliage, snowy hikes in the woods, and dark chocolate (I’m a bit of an addict).

When do you teach at Solstice/Empower ?

I teach at Empower Mondays 9:00-10:30 a.m. and Thursdays 6:00-7:30 p.m.

I teach at Solstice Mondays 12:00 -1:00 p.m., Tuesdays 9:00-10:15 a.m. and Fridays, 9:15-10:30 a.m.

As a teacher, I favor a vigorous yet peaceful practice, integrating the best elements of power yoga, teaching stability to foster mobility, and allowing space to explore anatomical precision and philosophical inspiration. My classes consist of a dynamic and powerful flow that emphasize creativity, strength, flexibility, and balance.

I have been inspired by so many teachers and styles over the years, but I still find my greatest inspiration from the students that step onto their mats each day and commit to themselves.

Share a quotation and/or message that inspires you ?

My yoga journey has been guided by Patanjali's quote, " When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds.Your mind transcends limitations, your conscious expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be. ”

6 Myths of Yoga

pexels-photo-374694.jpg

1.  Yoga is only for the flexible.
Do you know how many times we hear "I can't do yoga, I can't even touch my toes!"  Stiff?  YOU NEED YOGA.  Actually, everyone needs yoga.  If you are bendy, great.  Yoga will make you even more supple.  Tight & Stiff?  Yoga will loosen you up.  Somewhere in the middle?  Yoga will strengthen and lengthen.  Recovering from an injury?  Modify and take it easy, but yoga's healing powers are pretty amazing too!

2.  Yoga is not challenging.
We know there are a lot of athletes and Type-A's out there that think yoga is for sissies.  Come see for yourself...Power Yoga is tough!  You will bend, twist, balance and sweat.  You will work muscles and reach places in your body that haven't touched in a long time.  And we guarantee you will be challenged!  Whether you are new to yoga, or a veteran...whether you are an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just getting into a fitness program, yoga will meet you where you are and bring additional strength, balance, and flexibility to your life.

3.  Yoga is too challenging.
Just like we get the athletes that think yoga is not challenging, we hear from many more people who think they are not fit, flexible, "skinny", young or strong enough to take yoga classes.  Unless your doctor says you should not practice yoga for certain reasons, we can guarantee you will benefit from yoga classes no matter how out of shape, stiff, or weak you THINK you may be.  Yoga is for EVERY BODY. All poses can be modified.  We encourage you to go at your own pace.  And, you are welcome to take childs pose during class at ANY TIME.  The key is showing up!

3.  Yoga is boring.
Yoga, Heat, Music, Breath, Peace, Joy.   You won't be bored!  We have the BEST team of teachers, each with their own unique and individual style who mix up their sequences, flow, and playlists with every class.  It's a full experience that will keep you physically challenged (see above) as well as mentally focused.

4.  I need to take a beginners class to start yoga.
Beginners/Basics classes are great if they work with your schedule.  We offer ours on Saturdays & Sundays at 11 am.  These classes will move at a slower pace, and focus more on alignment than a typical class.  However, all our classes are ALL levels, so you will frequently find a brand new person in class next to a person who has been doing yoga for years.  It's all good.  Just follow the class, go at your own pace, modify, and don't do anything that doesn't feel right.  Remember, EVERYONE was a beginner at some point.  We've all been there.  We feel you.  But we also know you will feel so good after class and will love it.  Just go.

5. Yoga is too expensive.
Yoga may be an additional expense but the benefits of yoga will save you money in the long run.  Yoga is really not expensive.  Therapy is expensive.  Doctor visits are expensive.  Medication is expensive.  Health Care and Insurance costs are expensive.  While we can't claim that you will not need therapy, doctor visits, or medication, we can say that most people feel healthier physically and happier when they are practicing yoga, so that the need for extra medical or services can be reduced or avoided.  Yoga is also great for preventing and healing costly injuiries and reducing time and money spent on physical therapy, chiropractic care, etc.  Your physical and mental health is well worth your budget towards yoga.

6.  I don't have time for yoga.
You do have time.  Make time.  Yoga is for your body, yoga is for your mind, yoga is for your soul.  You need to make time for you and your health and well-being so that you can be there for everyone else in your life.  And we don't know how this works, but somehow when you make time for yoga, you find you are more productive at work and home, you are more focuses, more prioritized, and somehow you have MORE time
